Guys and gals,
i've just played the Beautiful Game.
If you know me, you'd know that i don't mean i just entered a beauty paegent. yup, you've guessed it....i'm referring to the love of my life...SOCCER!!
played for ORPC today in the Adonai League...against Jesus Lives Church...truly an inspiring day...can't wait to get back on the field man...so here's how the story went...
Eric and I reached the pitch slightly late, due to my packed schedule during the day (BB + Tuition). He was, of course, very nice to offer to fetch me to yishun, else God knows when i'd reach that ulu ulu pitch... Anyhow, upon reaching the pitch, a quick glance offered 2 interesting observations. No.1. Jesus Lives Church seems to be a predominantly Indian Christian church, since the only ppl we saw apart from our team were them. and by predominantly i mean 100%. Another observation about them was that they were all gathered, warmed up, and ready to go. All 15 of them. No.2 Our team: i first saw them under the void deck as usual, and since there were only like 4 of them there, i presumed the rest were on the pitch. Further inspection of the pitch showed that this was not so. No orange shirts there. Then, i asked the question which i'd probably knew the answer,"where's the rest?" which, of course, was greeted with grins all around. i.e. you're looking at them. ok.... it was time for kick-off and we had only 7 players? the opponent and referee already on the pitch... Not the brightest scenario if you ask me.... Thankfully, another guy popped up just before kick-off so we had the legal number of ppl...
So, we started the match, 8 vs 11 players. Memories of the whoopping that we got the previous week against Salem Fire Church sprung back to my mind...gosh..that was 0-5 with 11 vs 11...and what abt this? Guess we were just prepared for damage control until our "reinforcements arrive" according to Bill, although i suspected he was just trying to give us some hope...haha...
well, as expected, we took the lead 3 minutes into the game..
WAIT! did i say as expected? hahaha...of course that's not what i meant! just 3 minutes into the game, 8 vs 11, and us, a team who've never tasted victory before, taking the lead?? When Bill's shot squirmed in through the keeper's hands, i could scarcely believe it man...took me a full 5 seconds to react to his goal..hahaha...
with the goal in hand...i guess i was still waiting for the backlash...was thinking, " crap, now we've done it, now we've made them angry...time to dig in and hold the line man.." but, surprise surprise...we dominated possession and all...stringing passes together like an actual footie team..haha...1st time ever man...wonder if we shd start all our matches with 8 men only...
still, it was pretty tiring for 8 men to cover such a wide field, thank goodness 3 more guys came along later...finally we had a full team...with no subs as usual...
before the second half, we were 2-0 up...a schoolboy mudbath scramble in front of the opponent's goal ended with Bill poking the ball into the net somehow...which was not to say we had all the chances...the oppenent was really let down by the lack of a quality final ball or finish while we were just plain fortunate i guess...
the second half was rather poor, although our opponents dominated possession, we held our own..through a combination of luck (opponent hit the pole 3 times) and 'professional' defending (conceded 3 free kicks just outside our penalty box), we survived.. in fact, we scored a 3rd goal to effectively kill off the game..or so we thought...through their final free kick on the left of our penalty area, Jesus Lives Church finally got a consolation when their player sent in a inswinger that left our keeper stranded... the remainder of the game was played out with tired limbs and exhausted bodies... once again, i managed to get cramps in BOTH my calves...SIGH...sign of low fitness...
so...final score 3-1...first ever victory for ORPC...and the wonderful thing abt it all was that, at the end of the match, our opponent goalie called all of us guys together to hold hands and dedicate this match to our Lord! the whole game had been played in good spirits...competitive but clean...and to end it by giving thanks to God for this wonderful game he'd created was just the icing on the cake...that, my friend, is what i call the beautiful game!
Can't wait for next week man....leg itchy already...muahaha...
